SASI young riders set to hit the road

05 May 2017

SOUTH Australian Sports Institute (SASI) cyclists will be kept busy on the roads in the coming weeks when they compete in two key events.

On Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7, the SASI/ Callidus team will compete in the Tour of South West in country Victoria and then the following weekend the team will head to Tasmania for the Mersey Valley Tour.

The SASI/ Callidus Tour of South West team is: Liam Nolan, Braden O'Shea, Cooper Sayers, Joshua Harrison, Harry Carpenter, Maeve Moroney-Plouffe, Sophie Edwards and Bree Hargrave.

SASI lead cycling coach Brett Aitken said the events would be a solid test for the riders.

"It really is a great experience for them,'' he said. ''The Tour of South West will be the first time it is part of the National Road Series. I'm hoping to see good results in the individual time trial which is the main focus but the road race, for some, will be more experience.

The Tour of South West will consist of three stages. Stage One is the Individual Time Trial over 12.7km at the Wangoom Recreation Centre, Stage Two is the road race and then on Sunday the criterium will be held.

The Mersey Valley Tour, in its eleventh year, will be run betweeen Friday, May 12, and Sunday, May 14.

The SASI/ Callidus team for the Mersey Valley tour is: Bree Hargrave, Hannah Osborn, Sophie Edwards, Cooper Sayers, Luke Wight, Braden O'Shea and Liam Nolan.

South Australian Carlee Taylor was the only SA rider to win the event in 2008.

The tour is regarded as one of the toughest programs on the NRS calendar - a gruelling test of strength and stamina with the undulating landscape and steep climbs.
