SASI divers aim to shine at nationals

22 May 2017

OUTSTANDING South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) divers Taneka Kovchenko and Matthew Carter will be aiming to produce their best at the Australian Open Diving Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre between May 23 and 26.

The best athletes from the titles will be in line for selection for the Australian team to compete at the world championships in Budapest between July 14 and 30.

SASI coach Michel Larouche said he was confident that Taneka and Matthew would compete strongly at the national titles.

"They are both doing very well at the training camp (same venue as national titles) and are fit and healthy,'' he said.

"To make the Australian team they have to achieve certain scores in the preliminary, semi fnals and finals, so every dive is counted. They probably have to finish top two in their events but if they don't it is up to the selectors to decide. It is up to them (Taneka, Matthew) on the day to make it happen.''

Taneka will compete in the 10m Synchro with three time Olympian Melissa Wu and the 10m Individual Platform. Matthew has a busy schedule as he is expected to line up in the 3m Individual Springboard, Men's 3m Synchro with Olympic diver Kevin Chavez and Mixed 3m Synchro with Esther Qin. Matthew also will compete in the 1m Springboard.

SASI will also have Ross Todd competing in the Men's 10m individual, 10m Synchro and 3m individual events.

Other SASI divers competing at the titles are not currently on the national team so they can't be selected in the worlds team. However, this event will provide them with the opportunity to  be selected in the national squad if they meet all of the requirements.

Brodie Scapes is competing in the Men's 10m Synchro with Ross Todd and he is also in the Men's 10m Individual. Lily Foster will compete in the Women's 10m Individual Platform, while Kate Rosman is in the Women's 1m Springboard and 3m Springboard events.

The team for the world titles is expected to be announced at the awards dinner at the end of the national titles (May 26).
