Bronze for Sophie at Under-19 Road Nationals

SOPHIE Edwards grabbed a podium finish for the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) by winning a bronze medal at the Cycling Australia Under-19 Road Nationals in Geelong between June 16 and 18.
Sophie, from the Norwood Cycling Club, took the bronze medal in the Under-19 Women's Individual Time Trial on the first day of the three-day event.
She finished with a time of 29:45.1, behind Tasmanian riders Madeleine Fasnacht (28:29.8) and Anya Louw (29:35.4).
SASI had just the four riders involved at the nationals with Edwards, Liam Nolan, Cooper Sayers and Maeve Plouffe competing.
Liam, Cooper and Maeve all finished in the top 10 in their respective road race events, while Sophie was sixth in the women's criterium and Cooper fifth in the men's criterium.
Liam finished ninth in the men's time trial, while Maeve crashed in her time trial event but finished the event in front of a couple of athletes.
SASI head cycling coach Brett Aitken said it was a tough program for the SASI riders.
''While it probably wasn't as good a result as what we normally would have achieved, with such a small group of riders it was always going to be hard,'' he said.
''Sophie did very well and the others were close to the podium with top-10 finishes,'' he said.
''It wasn't disappointing. They were solid efforts. It is still part of their development and trying to get those athletes up to national standard and riding for Australia.''
Injured riders Brayden O'Shea (collarbone) and Jarrad Drizners (fractured kneecap) are making good progress from their injuries and could be on the road soon.
Riders will start preparing for their next main events later in July.
Some of the SASI team will compete at the International Track Series in Melbourne between July 25 and 29, while another group will head to the Tour of the Great South Coast, a five-day seven-stage tour, at about the same time. The event is a joint venture between country councils in South Australia and Victoria.
