SA athletes set for strong Paracycling world titles

28 Aug 2017

SASI athletes are ready to take on the best as members of the Australian team for the 2017 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in South Africa from August 31 to September 3.

Rising stars Darcy Thompson and Meg Lemon are expected to make their road world championships debut for Australia as will tandem duo Kieran Murphy and Pilot Lachlan Glasspool.

Reigning national champion Darren Hicks also will feature for this first time in this discipline for Australia. Injury has ruled out Grant Allen, also a national champion, who was selected in the team when it was announced.

The SA quintet is part of the 15-rider national team.

SASI Para-cycling Head Coach Loz Shaw said the SASI riders were ready to compete well.

''All of our riders are looking in good form and give SASI a strong hand in the team,'' he said.

''Meg won three of four world cups this year, Kieran and Lachlan had podium finishes in a world cup, Darren is debuting and Darcy is Darcy, one of the best and always gives his best. It is bad luck for Grant that he had to pull out because of injury.''

Some of the team members are backing up from the Australian championships held earlier in the year in Victoria.

The team leaves for the world championships on Thursday, August 24.
