Home matches a buzz for Hockeyroo Jane

HOCKEYROO and SASI scholarship holder Jane Claxton rates the chance to play in her home state for Australia against Japan as right up there with her Rio Olympics experience.
Claxton, part of the team's leadership group under coach Paul Gaudoin, said the past week had been special with the team dominating to take the three-Test series three games to nil. They set the scene early, winning the opening match 5-1, 2-1 in game two and bombarding the goal early in the third contest to cruise home 8-1.
The win and familiar faces in the crowd were special to Claxton.
''It was so exciting to be in front of our home crowd,'' she said.
''This team plays so many matches overseas and to be able to come back home and to play in front of our crowd and in Adelaide was special.
''I rate that up with the experience of playing at the Rio Olympics. Adelaide doesn't always get the chance to host events like this so it was great to be here.
''It is also nice to end the season on a high.''
The Hockeyroos last played Japan in Adelaide 10 years ago.
The team, which included SASI athlete Gabi Nance, has undergone a significant rebuild with the emphasis on introducing young players to the squad.
It had a poor Rio campaign, crashing out of the competition before the medal rounds began.
For the time being the squad will rest and then head to Perth for a training camp from January 6-21.
The Commonwealth Games will be the next target for the team with reigning Olympic champion Great Britain and New Zealand among the teams to beat.
