SASI teams aims for a grand time on the water
05 Feb 2018
SEVENTEEN SASI athletes and several promising juniors are ready to hit the water against some of Australia's best athletes at this week's Canoe Sprint Oceania Championship and Grand Prix 2 event at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.
Acting SASI Canoe Sprint Head Coach Dusan Ruzicic said the event, from February 8 to 11, was important for the team to see how it was progressing with qualifying for national titles a key target.
''It is an important regatta but it is not make or break,'' Ruzicic said.
''Hopefully we should be able to qualify all of our crews and boats for the regatta in March (national titles).
''It is important for the athletes to do well and make an impression and also for the coaches to have a good look at them and work on possible combinations for national teams too.
''While it is nearly impossible to make predictions before an event I can usually tell on the day how they (athletes) are tracking after the heats.''
While this week's competition is an open format, the program for the nationals between March 6 to 10 is graded into juniors, under-23s and seniors.
Among the SASI athletes looking solid in their respective categories for this weekend include Matt Goble, Jayden Ellis, Sean Lohse, Francesca Kidd, Cat McArthur (SASI but relocated to Gold Coast), Josephine Bulmer, Charlie Ellis and Jesse Kneebone Ellis.
The national titles also will be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre between March 6 and 10.
