SASI stars ready to take the plunge at swim trials
26 Feb 2018
MONTHS of hard work, training camps and local competitions will be on show for the cream of Australia's best swimmers at the Australian Swimming Trials at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.
The event will be used to select the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games, also on the Gold Coast, between April 4 and 14.
SASI athletes Olympic gold medallist Kyle Chalmers, Rio Olympian Travis Mahoney and stars Andrew Abood and Ethan Owens will be among the competitors aiming to make it on to the team.
Mahoney, 27, said he was excited about the road ahead.
''Everything is going well and the preparation and training program have been good for me and I think the team too,'' Mahoney said.
''I'm looking forward to getting out there and doing my best.
''It would be a big thrill to make the team and to have that home support. I remember a Scottish swimmer winning in Glasgow and the noise and support for them was amazing.
''It would be nice to have your family and friends able to see you perform at home.''
The SASI quartet will be kept busy during the trials.
Chalmers is expected to line up in the 50m, 100m and 200m free, Mahoney has nominated for the 200m free, 200m Individual Medley and 400m Individual Medley, Ethan Owens is in for the 200m, 400m and 1500m free, while Andrew Abood will target the 50m and 100m free.
The top three from each event who also achieve an A qualifying time will be selected in the team which is expected to contain about 50 athletes.
SASI Head Coach Swimming Peter Bishop and Assistant Coach Craig Stewart also will attend the selection trials.
The event will be screened on Channel 7.
