World championship junior stars head for camp

04 May 2018

THE countdown is on for the 13-member Australian squad which will head to an intense training camp in Adelaide next week to prepare for the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Aigle, Switzerland, between August 15 and 19.

SASI athletes Luke Wight, Sophie Edwards and Leigh Hoffman will be in the team looking to show their best form when competition begins.

The Australian team will feature a mix of seasoned performers and several debutants.

Hoffman, a national sprint champion, will compete in the Men's Sprint with Thomas Cornish (NSW), Wight will line up in the Men's Endurance, while Edwards will take part in the Women's Endurance.

SASI Head Coach Cycling Brett Aitken said the camp and championship would provide invaluable experience for the trio.

''It will be their first opportunity at international level,'' Aitken said.

''We're really hopeful they can all do well but it's early stages so we just don't know yet. But it will be exciting for them.

''After the camp they will go back to their individual coaches and then come together for final preparations before the competition.''

The team was selected after the national titles in February in Brisbane.
