Kat's enjoying the ride to success

KAT Williams again showed that skateboarders were a durable group with a gruelling international competition in China, backed up a day or two later with a silver medal at the Australian Championships of Street Skateboarding on the Central Coast, New South Wales.
Williams, 29, mixed it with many top skateboarders from around the world by making the final at the International Skateboarding Open in Nanjing, China.
She then virtually jumped off the plane to grab a silver medal at the inaugural Australian Championships of Street Skateboarding in the open women's category without little rest or preparation.
Williams said she was thrilled with her results.
''In China it was really good to be a part of the experience and to see how other girls tackled an event like that,'' Williams said.
''I have learned a lot and probably looking at how to skate competitions like that a bit better.
''I had never been to an event like China where there was an opening ceremony.
''When I left China to head to Bato Bay I knew it would be hard but thought I would be okay if I could get my legs moving. It was a good experience and I had a lot of fun.''
Williams, a SASI scholar, said the Tokyo Olympics was the driving force but it was a bit tricky as to what her preparation would be from now until the Games.
''There are a number of World Cups coming up but we have just learned that qualifying points for Tokyo would be held for most of 2019,'' Kat said.
''So the decision is to either stay here (Australia) and work on some things here or look to go to the US for a short time to get that harder competition and training.
''It's all exciting but we are still not sure which way we will go. Money is always a big thing as it costs to go to these places.''
Williams, SASI's first skateboarding schloarship holder as part of the Individual Athlete Program, will continue her work as a high achiever off the park - abseiling Adelaide's skyscrapers as a high-rise window cleaner.
