SEVERAL seasoned athletes and one debutant will represent the SA Sports Institute (SASI) as part of the Australian team which will compete at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in the Netherlands between March 14 and 17, 2019.
Meg Lemon, Darren Hicks, Darcy Thompson, Brad Henderson and debutant Paige Greco who relocated to SA last year from Victoria, are the SASI athletes in the 17-strong team heading to the world titles. Henderson's pilot is expected to be named soon.
SASI Para-cycling coach Loz Shaw said the SASI athletes were ready for a top showing.
"They have all done very well and all of them are in pretty good form," Shaw said.
"I think they will do very well knowing how hard they have worked. I'm looking forward to seeing how they go."
The championship offers vital qualification points towards the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games with the Australian team set to compete against 200 of the world’s best athletes from an estimated 30 countries.
The selections feature a strong contingent of reigning and former world champions from various Australian states.
The Australian team will head to Brisbane in late January for a team training camp and UCI Category 2 event before heading to the Netherlands in late March.
The Australian team is looking to build on its 10 medals at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio, the fourth most by any nation behind Great Britain, Netherlands and China.
