SASI Para-cycling champs to hit the road for world titles
5 June 2019
SASI again will be strongly represented on the international stage when three athletes don the national green and gold colours at the 2019 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Emmen, the Netherlands, between September 12 and 15.
Producing dazzling performances in the past few months, Paige Greco, Darren Hicks and Meg Lemon captured the selectors' attention to win their places on the 14-strong team.
The trio played a major part in Australia's success at the start of the Para-cycling international season where the team won 24 medals, including eight gold medals, in May during the world cups in Italy and Belgium.
Greco will make her debut at the world titles, Lemon is a 2018 Road World Championship medallist, while Hicks will look to add another gold medal to his resume after winning a track world championship in March.
Greco is tipped to be a potential star in the sport after outstanding success in a short time, while Lemon and Hicks are proven performers in tough competition.
SASI Para-cycling coach Loz Shaw said the selections of the SASI athletes was fantastic.
"They are all going so well and ticking all of the boxes," Shaw said.
"They are very disciplined with whatever they do and really good to work with.
"We're hoping to stamp another world title on their rainbow jerseys. Before that they will go to the world cup in Canada (August), the climbs there will be harder for Darren but Meg and Paige will just fly up them - they are so strong.''
The Australian team will head to the world championships after Canada.
The championships will see the Australian team line up against 200 of the world's best athletes from 30 countries in time trials and road races. It also will provide important qualification points towards the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
The Australian team is:
