Australia produces a stunner in Rotterdam to claim World Rowing Cup
16 July 2019
ROTTERDAM should hold a special place in the hearts of Australian rowers after the team produced a stunning effort to take out the World Rowing Cup 3 - giving Australia the overall champion's crown during the cup competition.
In Cup 3 the team won five gold medals, three silvers and a bronze medal to top the table after a similar result in Cup 2 in Poznan.
In Rotterdam gold medals were won in the men's and women's pairs and fours and the lightweight men's.
SASI athletes Alex Hill, Olympia Aldersey and Molly Goodman all played key parts in the team's success.
Hill teamed with Spencer Turrin to return a dazzling effort in the men's pair to grab gold, Olympia Aldersey also shone as a member of the women's fours to snare the gold, while Molly Goodman was in the women's eights team which won silver.
The top results also had special meaning as the crews and coaches mourned the recent passing of four-time Olympic coach Nick Garratt.
Turrin and Hill both said the team's progression and development were important.
"We stepped it up well during the regatta. We're looking forward to stepping it up as a team, coming into the world rowing championships,'' they said.
The senior world rowing championships will be held at Ottensheim, Austria, between August 25 and September 1.
