14 August 2019
HE'S wiser, more seasoned and in good shape but rising hockey star Lachie Busiko is not content to just roll on.
After a strong showing at the recent national under-21 titles SASI scholar Busiko has been named in Australia's under-21 team for the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia in October. Of the 18 players named in the squad Busiko is one of four players to have played at the tournament and is the only South Australian in this year's squad.
Busiko, a development officer with Hockey SA, has been playing senior club matches with Seacliff which sits top of its competition. He is also training for the Hockey One state team with the new-look Adelaide Fire in a rebranding of the national competition.
But Busiko is zooming in on the trip to Malaysia and helping the team win the cup for the third time after it saluted in 2016 and 2017. It will be competing in its eight Sultan of Johor Cup this October.
As a seasoned member of the team Busiko says he feels comfortable about the format and what to expect.
"Being a top-age athlete now in the team I want to be a leader in the group,'' Busiko said.
"I am going to be really focused on working on my style of play, developing my hockey smarts and being pro-active when I am not in possession. I think my form has been stronger this season.''
Burras coach Ben Bishop said he was confident the team would give a strong account.
"It is an extremely valuable tournament that we are lucky to be able to attend each year,'' Bishop said.
"The competition, conditions and international travel opportunity all provide for a fantastic development experience for our emerging athletes.''
Australia, India, Great Britain, Malaysia, New Zealand and Japan will compete in the week-long event between October 12 and 19 in Johor, Bahru, Malaysia. Australia's first game is on October 12 against Japan.
