Young SASI rowers vie for World Championship teams

SASI underage rowers will figure prominently at the coming World Championship selection regatta at Penrith

SASI will be represented strongly at the 2017 Underage Selection Trials at the Sydney International Rowing Centre, Penrith, between April 24 and 30.

The trials will be the platform where junior teams are selected to represent Australia at world titles later in the year. The under-23 World Championship will be in Bulgaria from July 19-23.

An under-21 squad will compete for the Trans-Tasman Challenge Regatta between Australian and New Zealand rowers. The first of those events is in Sydney at the end of June, while the second will be hosted by New Zealand in late September.

SASI Head Rowing Coach Jason Lane said the athletes had plenty to look forward to with the coming selection trials a solid starting point.

"We have a good number of athletes in a variety of categories,'' he said.

''It is just reward for all of their hard work and an exciting opportunity for the athletes to be apart of the underage international selections.''

SASI rowers selected for the coming trials after excellent results at the rowing nationals between March 27 and April 2, 2017, include:

Under 21 Men's Sweep: Kane Grant

Under 23 Men's Sculling: Hugo Langsford

Under 23 Women's Lightweight Sculling: Verayna Zilm  (eligible for under-21)

The young rowers will be looking to continue the outstanding results of some of the senior rowers such as Olympia Aldersey who returned excellent results at the national championships, earning selection in Australian senior team.
