Solid showing from SA's young hockey stars

It was a mixed bag for South Australia's junior hockey teams at the Australian Under-21 championshps in Wollongong betweeen July 7 and 14

SOUTH Australia's young women hockey players performed strongly at the  Australian Under-21 championship last week at the Illawarra Hockey Centre in Wollongong.

The team finished fourth after losing 3-0 to Queensland in a bronze medal play off but had plenty of good moments in the lead up to that match. SA was unbeaten in the pool games to qualify for the top four and medal play offs but was outgunned in later games.

SASI and SA women's coach Tim White was pleased with the effort.

''It was more than a reasonable week,'' he said. ''It is rare for one of our sides, men or women, to take a top four so it was a good result.

''The girls found it tough in the medal rounds but had some good games.''

Among SA's best players for the week included Miki Spano, Euleena MacLachlan, Leah Welstead, goalkeeper Amy Hammond and Linzi Appleyard. New South Wales beat Western Australia 2-1 in the final, while the SA women improved on last year's fifth placing to grab fourth.

Spano has a coming tour of Japan (from August 6) as a member of the Australian development team while some of the SA team could be in line for selection in the coming Australia Hockey League competition.

The men's under-21 team found the opposition too tough with just the one win for the week.

Lachlan Busiko was among SA's better players in the tournament.
