Swimmers take their blocks for state pride

Young swimmers from around Australia will vie for bragging rights at the 2017 State Teams Championships in Canberra between Friday, September 24, and Sunday, September 26

OUTSTANDING athlete Bethan Mounfield is looking forward to flying the flag for South Australia and SASI when she competes at the 2017 State Teams Championships at the AIS in Canberra this weekend.

Bethan, 16, recently returned from the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis, US, in August where her involvement at the titles proved bitter/sweet - her team being disqualified in a relay heat after a swimmer entered the water too quickly.

But Bethan said the overall experience at the world titles was fantastic.

''The result certainly could have been better,'' she said.

''But the whole event was a learning process for me.

''After our disqualification I wanted to stay positive and stick around and support the team.

''The experience was surreal. I learned that you can't control everything and you need to move on quickly and not think about what could have been.

''Everyone was fantastic and I learned so much from other athletes, coaches.''

Rested and well prepared Bethan is expected to have a busy schedule this weekend in Canberra.

She will likely line up in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyles and relays for the Under-17 competition.

''The meet should be great and hopefully a bit of fun for all of us representing our  states,'' she said.

''I have had a good few weeks so am looking forward to this weekend.''

After the states' event Bethan will turn her focus to the Australian Short Course Championship in Adelaide between October 26 and 28.
