Young SASI stars battle hard in Canberra

South Australia found the might of other states a little too strong at the recent 2017 State Teams Championships in Canberra to finish fifth

FOUR SASI athletes were among the SA swim team which battled tough opposition at the 2017 State Teams Championships at the AIS in Canberra between Friday, September 22, and Sunday, September 24.

SASI swimmers Brittany Castelluzzo, Emily White, Tori Wright and Bethan Mounfield were among the SA team which competed against other Australian states in a hectic schedule.

A team event, the SASI swimmers contributed strongly to the overall SA result which saw it placed fifth at the end of the fourth and final sesssion.

One of the highlights for SASI was the effort of Emily who won the 13-14 overall age group with victories in the 800m free, 400m IM and 400m free. She also finished second in the 200m fly.

Brittany took out the 200m fly in the 15-16 girls group, while Bethan was consistent without winning, grabbing second in the 15-16 girls 400m free, 800m free and 200m free.

She also lined up in relay events to finish third in the 15-16 4 X 100m free and 4 x 200m free.

Tori was not placed in her events but still contibuted handy points for the team.

Swimming SA coach Cory Bampton, who was in Canberra with the team, said the SASI athletes had plenty of good moments.

''The competition was very strong and the fomat was very quick,'' he said.

''There were just four sessions but they were back-to-back and the events were quite challenging.

''All the girls did a very good job. Although it wasn't an individual format Emily was great in winning her age group.

''She is still young but has had some top results.''

The focus now for most of the SA swimmers will be the Australian Short Course Championship in Adelaide between October 26 and 28.
