SA aims to set pace again at track nationals

SASI athletes will battle the cream of Australia's best cyclists this week at the 2018 Cycling Australia Track National Championships at Brisbane's Anna Meares Velodrome

SOUTH Australia again will look to have the pack chasing when it competes against the nation's best elite and Under-19 riders at the Cycling Australia Track National Championship in Brisbane.

The event, to be held at the Anna Meares Velodrome between February 1 and 4, is at the same venue as the Commonwealth Games competition in April.

The SA team, most of it SASI scholarship holders or graduates, will look to snare a big haul of the 34 national titles on offer.

The SA team, featuring 2017 Mens team pursuit World Champions Alex Porter and Rohan Wight, was the best performed state at last season's national track titles and has been a leader at similar events in recent years.

South Australia and SASI Head Coach Brett Aitken said the team was ready to give the titles a decent shake.

''While this event is not a selection event for Commonwalth Games our athletes will still be looking for a solid hit out,'' he said.

''We have a really strong line up and it will give an indication of their current form leading into the Commonwealth Games. It is a plus also having our SASI Graduates in the HPU (High Performance Unit) athletes coming into our team. It will be a good time to put some good scores on the board.''

The SA team is:

Elite men: James Brister; Thomas Clarke; Patrick Constable; Jarrad Drizners; Matthew Glaetzer; Joshua Harrison; Braden O'Shea; Alexander Porter; Cooper Sayers; Callum Scotson; Rohan Wight.

Elite women: Alexandra Manly; Rikki Belder; Annette Edmondson; Breanna Hargrave; Stephanie Morton; Maeve Plouffe; Holly Takos.

Under-19 men: Carlos Carisimo; Leigh Hoffman; Emerson Nugent; Tristan Sanders; Kael Thomas; Cooper Tye; Lewis Walker; Luke Wight.

Under-19 women: Sophie Edwards; Heather May; Brooklyn Vonderwall; Olivia Wheeler.

The athletes will have a short break after the titles to prepare for the 2018 NRS series and Oceania Road Championships.
