Setbacks won't stop the Tallent team

Injury has forced champion walker Jared Tallent out of the Commonwealth Games selection event this Sunday (February 11) in Adelaide, while wife Claire aims to cast aside a scary training accident to make the team on Sunday

LIFE on the training track has not been smooth sailing recently for champion husband and wife athletes Jared and Claire Tallent.

Injury to Jared and a training brush with a car for Claire has put a hurdle in their way attempting to qualify for Australia's Commonwealth Games walking team.

Jared has ruled himself out of the Australian 20km Road Race on Sunday in Adelaide which also was the selection event for the Commonwealth Games.

He fears he may have slightly torn his right hamstring in the past few days after pulling up sore from a training walk the previous Wednesday.

The injury was the different leg to his prior injury which hampered him for most of 2017.

With no qualification standard reached in the past 12 months for the Games' team, Jared would not be eligible for an injury exemption to make the team.

Jarred ,an Olympic Gold medallist at the 2012 London Games, said it was disappointing but he would push on.

''Hopefully it is just a minor injury and I will be back walking in about a week,'' he said.

''It is too late for the Commonwealth Games but I am aiming to make the world team champs in May in China (Taicang).

''I have had problems with my right hamstring in the past and now it looks like a tendon in the left hamstring.''

Claire will line up in Sunday's event hoping to qualify after a harrowing incident with a car while she was training.

''I'm thrilled to be making it to the start line this weekend,'' she said.

''Two weeks ago I was hit by a car on a training walk and went over the bonnet.

''It was a terrifying experience. It has made me all the more grateful for being able to do what I do, compete in my home town and in front of my family.

''Should I make the team this weekend it will make it all the more sweeter.''

The top three in the women's event on Sunday are expected to make the team for the Gold Coast.
