THERE will be little rest for up-and-coming stars Ethan Owens and Emily White when they line up in the 16-strong Australian team at the Oceania Swimming Championships in Port Moresby between June 25 and 30.

The SASI duo have caught the eye in swimming ranks lately, earning their selection in the competition which will involve countries from or near the Oceania region.

The event was introduced in 1993 in New Caldeonia and is held mainly every two years by countries in the region.

Ethan, 21, a member of Marion Swimming Club and coached by SASI Assistant Coach Craig Stewart, said he was looking forward to the challenge.

''This will be my first time on a team for an international competition,'' Ethan said.

''I'm excited to see what is ahead and my goal is to hopefully win a couple of medals.''

Ethan's program will be taxing. At this stage he is nominated for the 400m and 1500m in the pool and the 5km and 10km open water events.

While the open water events are staight out finals, there may be heats and semi finals invloved in the pool to add to his workload.

''Most of my training is in the pool but it is hard to sumulate the experience of competition and being in open water for the open water events,'' Ethan said.

''I think I am better suited to the 5km but I find with the 5km and certainly the 10km you need a turn of speed. It will be interesting to see how everything goes.''

Ethan is a third-year journalism student at University SA.

All going well he will return from competition and head straight to the Pan Pacific Swimming Trials between July 1 and 4 in Adelaide.

Emily, 14, is looking forward to the Oceania titles and to absorb the experience.

''I will be happy for PBs and to do the best I can,'' Emily said.

''I'm really excited to be going and to see just how the other athletes go about their events.''

Emily attends Pembroke School and is coached at Norwood Swimming Club by Shaun Curtis.
