SASI stars set for Youth Olympic Games

Excitement is building for young Australian athletes, including several from the SA Sports Institute, after winning selection into the national team which will compete at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between October 6 and 18

COMMONWEALTH Games bronze medallist Matthew Carter's whirlwind season of success in diving competitions is set to continue with his selection in the Australian team to compete at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, between October 6 and 18.

Carter, 17, was one of two divers (Alysha Kolo, Queensland, the other) selected in the 88-strong Australian team which will compete in 32 sports for athletes aged between 15 and 18.

Carter faced a gruelling test to make the team - needing to finish in the top nine of the recent FINA World Junior Diving Championship in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he won two of the team's three bronze medals.

Carter sealed the deal when he caught the eye of many followers by having a crack at the meeting's most difficult dive. He performed a forward 2.5 somersault triple twist pike with a degree of difficulty of 4.9, earning 85.3 points and meeting the criteria to qualify for the YOG team.

Carter said it was hard work to make the youth team.

"The most challenging part of trying for a place at the YOG was trying to remain focused in very long events," Carter said.

"Some of my events were over four and a half hours long."

The men's diving events will be held on October 14 and 16.

SASI also will be represented by outstanding athletes Alex Hoberg and Victoria Rossiter who will compete in shooting.

Other South Australians competing are Ruby Port in 3X3 basketball and Charlotte Derbyshire who will line up in triathlon.

The Games will feature four new sports in sport climbing and karate, which are set for their Olympic debut in Tokyo, as well as break dancing and roller sports.

The Games also provide educational chances for athletes to learn about the Olympic Games and its values. The slogan for this year's YOG is Feel the future.
