Matt Temple is ready to fly in Paris

Tonight, Matt Temple is primed to make a splash at the Paris Olympics in the men’s 100m butterfly.

His efforts in this event have already proven fruitful as he stormed home to a new Australian record of 50.25 seconds in December 2023.

The time, which topped the previous record of a 50.45, would have been enough for a gold medal in every Olympic Games in history other than Tokyo 2020. It remains a strong reminder for Temple that he is more than ready to shoot for his first individual Olympic medal.

“Obviously I’d like to make an Olympic final, and if I can get on the podium and achieve my goal of an individual medal at the Paris Olympic Games, I think that would be pretty exciting,” Temple said.

“You train for four years just for a 50 second race, so you have got to make sure that everything comes together well and perfect.”

The 25-year-old has landed in the village with the invaluable trait of experience, having competed in his first Olympic Games at Tokyo 2020.

With support from the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI), his team is powering greatness all the way to Paris to ensure he is prepared to achieve a medal-winning time.

“There’s so many people that are behind me and a part of my team on my journey to Paris, and I don’t think I could do it without them,” Temple said.

“There is just so many key roles that nobody would really know that gets filled by these people being a part of my team.

“We’re fortunate enough to have great facilities down here (at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre) using the big screen with some real time camera footage that we can review 10 seconds after we’ve just done the turn.

“We can see right there and then how we’ve gone, what we need to fix and what we need to change, and we’ve got a lot of guidance there as well.”

Watch Temple in the men’s 100m butterfly heats at 6.30pm ACST tonight on Nine or 9Now.
